Automatic Classification of Collapsed Buildings using Stereo Aerial Images

چکیده

After an earthquake, the image-based interpretation methods are powerful tools for detection and classification of damaged buildings. A method based on two kinds of image-extracted features comparing stereo pairs of aerial images before and after an earthquake is presented. Comparing preand post event DSMs generated from stereo images could be a solution for detecting the extent of demolished areas of buildings. However such DSMs are not sufficiently accurate due to image matching problems. We propose "Regularity indices" to describe the appearance of the building as regular or irregular. Regularity indices were defined by taking account of lines composition with regards to building footprint. In addition, a normalized value of average differences between DSMs (within each building polygon) is added into the classification procedures. Three kinds of classification methods: k-NN, naive Bayes and support vector machine (SVM) are used and compared. Experiments are performed on two datasets of the Kobe and Bam earthquakes including vast varieties of real collapsed buildings. The numerical results achieved for our datasets are very promising to detect and classify collapsed buildings automatically.

Image-based Recognition and Classification of Damaged Buildings Using Bayesian Network

After an earthquake, a fast ascertainment of the affected buildings and people is helpful for the disaster management in order to allocate the limited search and rescue resources (personnel and equipment) for each individual collapsed building. We develop a system that automatically interprets data produced by aerial sensors before and after an earthquake in order to arrive at a detailed damage...

Automatic Building Outline Reconstruction Using 2D Building Data and Stereo Images

In this paper, we proposed an automatic procedure to reconstruct building outline using building data and stereo aerial images. Our methods focused on the outline of building, excluding the inner structure of roof surface. This procedure includes five steps, 1) to produce the edge gradient images by Canny Detector, 2) to defined the valid workspace in object space and image space by building da...

Building-damage detection using pre- and post-seismic high-resolution satellite stereo imagery: A case study of the May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake

To address the disadvantage of traditional methods providing only two-dimensional (2D) damage change of the collapsed buildings, this paper presents an approach for the detection of the buildings that have collapsed in an earthquake based on 3D geometric changes, particularly height change of the buildings, using preand post-seismic IKONOS stereo image pairs. One of the critical issues – the ac...

Building Damage Detection from Post-earthquake

The collapsed buildings due to earthquake were detected from post-event aerial images using watershed segmentation algorithm. The objective was to detect the collapsed buildings based on the analysis of the cast shadows. The building boundaries were available and stored in a GIS as vector polygons. The building polygons were utilized to perform assessments in a building specific manner. The app...
